Kevin McCaffrey, 47, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs in the 2021 crash, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said. Judge Michael Doolin also sentenced McCaffrey to seven years probation once he's released from prison.

Prosecutors said McCaffrey's 2012 Honda Civic careened off Theodore Glynn Parkway in Roxbury just before 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 16 and slammed into three people.

Lisa Vadeboncoeur, 59, a mother of two and grandmother of four, died after paramedics rushed her to Boston Medical Center. Another victim needed emergency surgery to repair leg and head injuries, and the third victim was well enough to be treated and released the day of the crash, the DA's office said.

Toxicology reports showed McCaffrey had fentanyl, cocaine, and benzodiazepines in his system when he crashed, the DA's office said. McCaffrey told officers that he took cocaine to keep him awake before getting behind the wheel, reports at the time stated. But during his interview with detectives, McCaffrey was so high he could barely stay awake and nodded off several times, officials said.

“Mr. McCaffrey made numerous tragic choices that morning," Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a news release. "He chose to ingest powerful drugs, then he chose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive on city streets. Those choices led to one person’s death and another’s serious injuries, and to survivors forever mourning a beloved family member and friend."
